What to Do Before We Arrive
If water is running where it should not be, shut it off at the meter box near the curb. That single valve stops everything feeding the house and it is the most useful thing most people can do. If the leak is at one fixture and its stop valve turns freely, closing that is enough. Do not force an old valve that has seized, because a snapped stop turns a small job into a bigger one.
If a drain is backing up, stop running water anywhere in the property, including the dishwasher and washing machine. Everything you send down has to go somewhere, and with a blocked main line it comes back into the lowest fixture in the house. Keep people and pets away from any sewage that has already come up.
Leave three things alone entirely: gas connections, anything electrical near standing water, and pressurized or hot systems. That includes opening a drain valve on a hot water heater and going into an attic where water is running near wiring. Switching off an electric heater at its breaker, or a gas unit at its control dial, is reasonable only if the unit is dry and easy to reach.
